How to Create a Vision Board

By | Published | No Comments

Before diving into how to create a vision board, let us review the ‘why.’

Dreams give us the power to rise above any circumstances. Every person who achieved something great started with an idea or a dream. In his phenomenal work “Man’s Search for Meaning,” Viktor Frankl described how his vision gave him purpose and a will to persevere in the direst of circumstances. In the darkest moment of his life, while being held captive in a concentration camp, he described the power of a vision.

“Suddenly I saw myself standing on the platform of a well-lit, warm and pleasant lecture room. In front of me sat an attentive audience on comfortable upholstered seats. I was giving a lecture on the psychology of the concentration camp! All that oppressed me at that moment became objective, seen, and described from the remote viewpoint of science.

By this method, I succeeded somehow in rising above the situation, above the sufferings of the moment, and I observed them as if they were already of the past.”

Viktor Frankl

Once you have a dream, you need to nurture it and let it grow. Often, however, ideas and dreams never become a reality. Most people do not act on their dreams.

The first step to achieving your dream is to visualize it. You can picture it in your mind, but better yet, put it on paper. Create a visualization board, and reference it often. This visualization board will be your jumping-off point to the life of your dreams.

How to Create a Vision Board

1. Decide what to put on the vision board

  • Think through your dreams and what you want to achieve in your life. Write them down on the vision board.
    • Organize your goals by the sections on the Visualization Board
    • Alternatively, complete Life Balance Wheel, a free downloadable PDF, to determine what areas of your life you would like to focus on.

2. Find the pictures that best represent your dreams

Online

  • Go to Google Images, and enter your search criteria. Save pictures to your computer.
  • Another excellent option for free images online is Pixabay.com. Similar to Google Images, type in your search criteria and download the pictures.

Magazines and Print Media

  • If you have magazines lying around, look through them for inspiration.
  • Cut out images that best represent your dreams.

3. Make a collage of the images

  • Open the word processing document.
    • Select Insert and Pictures, insert the pictures you saved or use stock pictures.
  • Resize the images as needed
  • Print the document and paste images into the planner.
  • Canva.com is a great free platform to create collages.
    • Type ‘photo collage’ in the search box
    • Select one of the many free photo collage boards available
    • Select +Add Page to add additional pages
    • Go to the Uploads section on the left-hand side
    • Upload or drag and drop images into the gallery
    • Change the pictures on the collage to your own by dragging them into the designated places
  • After you have the vision board, download it to PDF
    • Print PDF document. (Hint: to save paper, go to ‘More Settings’ in the print options and select 4 pages per sheet)
    • Paste the printed images to the visualization board
  • If No Printer – save the file to a computer for reference
  • Cut out pictures and paste them into the planner

After You Create a Vision Board

After your vision board is complete, come back and review it daily. Make goals that will help you achieve your dreams and stick to them. Only YOU are in control of where and how far you can go!

P.S. People will tell you that you will not be able to achieve something or that you can’t go to a certain height. Always ask them if they have been there or achieved that. Typically the answer will be a ‘no.’ The fact that they have never been to the place where you are going completely disqualifies them from telling you that you cannot get there.
